1979 Wellcraft Scarab 300 offshore powerboat
Description
Up for auction is a mostly restored '79 Scarab Powerboat. I bought this boat 3 years ago at Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. The boat was in relatively good shape except for stringer, transom, and bulkhead rot. From the paperwork I have the boat spent most if not all it's life at Lake of the Ozarks.
The boat and trailer underwent a thorough restoration here at this shop performed by myself and others. You can read about the restoration and see detailed photos on the offshoreonly forum, go down to the scarab topic and look for "79 scarab 300 resto" topic.Most of the stringers were replaced, as well as the transom and some bulkheads. This is all detailed in the link above. The entire exterior of the boat was refinished with Sherwin-Williams products. The hull bottom was painted single stage (no clearcoat) and the deck, sides, and outside of the transom were painted with base/clear. A low profile windshield was added that was taken from a scarab S-Type. The windshield frame, hatch frames, engine heads and blocks and other various pieces were painted a terra cotta color.
As far as the drivetrain, the boat is powered by twin 454 ci big block chevy engines that have been stroked to 489 cubic inches. Engines have scat cranks and all internal parts are forged. The heads have 2.19 inch intake and 1.88 inch exhaust valves. Superchargers are Weiand 256's with twin Holley 600's sitting on them. They are running new Milodon 10 quart oil pans. The exhaust is GIL wet exhaust.These motors have not been dynoed but should put out in the upper 500hp range. The egines are attached to mercury merctrans II transmissions that have been rebuilt and modified at KC transmission in Washington state. The transmissions are pushing mercury TRS outdrives.
The engines are low hours. See the hour meters. Hour meters were replaced last winter as the engines werebeing put back together. The starboard engine has less hours than what is showing on the meter. The engines are running amsoil synthetic, as well as the transmissions. The drives are running mercury oil.
The props are 25 pitch. Right now the boat will run 70 mph at 4500 rpm.
The boat has Latham Marine Hydraulic Steering that works excellent. I bought the steering used and sent the cylinders back to Latham in Fort Lauderdale and they reworked and rechromed them. Hydro steering is a must for going fast in an older heavy boat. Speaking of which, this boat is a straight hull (no steps) and has about a 47* deadrise. This boat is comfortable in rough water.
We sandblasted, replaced the fenders, and painted the trailer too. The trailer has Dayton axles that the previous owner reworked and they work well so we kept them. The surge brakes work great.
Things wrong:>The fuel tank sending unit is broken. We just top it off when we go to the lake. The tank holds 150 gallons (900 lbs.), so if you want to go fast you'll want to get this fixed and run 1/4 tank when going fast.>Upholstery is not perfect. cockpit has some fading and some stains, interior is pretty nice. It's all in great usable shape.>I never did install indicators on the drives or K Planes. It could use them on the drives.>The skegs on the drives could use a repaint. I'll throw that in if we make a deal.
This is a nice boat that lacks little. All boats lack something.Can be used as it is no problem.Reason for selling. Too many projects going on.
