Flying Cloud is a 22’ Clyst Class Sloop, built in 1965. She is of carvel construction, planked in mahogany on oak frames. She is both elegant and seaworthy, capable of both shallow, inland cruising and long-distance ocean passages.
She is hull number 4, of five Clyst Class sloops designed and built by J.J. Bickford in Topsham, Devon, UK.
In my 4 years of ownership we have visited 10 different countries and cruised around 6000 NM. In every port, in every country she has been admired. Often for being so petite, but mostly for being a very pretty boat, characteristic of her time.
She has a Yanmar 1GM10 inboard engine, an efficient masthead rig, 3 berths, and a 2 burner alcohol stove. She also has a small spray hood, a homemade self-steering gear, and a 10’ sculling oar. At 3.5 tons, with a 40% ballast ratio, she is also a capable, seagoing yacht.
In 2017, I crossed the Atlantic in her from Cape Verde to Grenada. She completed the 2000 mile passage in 20 days. I’m now cruising up from the Caribbean to the States, and am willing to deliver to anywhere on the east coast. Here is a video of the triphttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tNVVmZBX3wo
Also in her inventory are 2 genoa’s, 3 smaller jobs, a cruising spinnaker, a storm job and a single mainsail. All are in ok condition. She has two 25 pound anchors, one fisherman’s and one CQR, along with 30 m of chain. An Avon inflatable tender, with two wooden oars, is also included.
The sentimental attachment that has grown between the two of us is so strong, that it’s almost heartbreaking to offer her for sale. I can only hope that she can show someone else the same, life-changing adventures that she has showed me.
