OUTRAGEOUS VIKING DRAGON SHIP, sailboat, sail, party boat, historic replica
Description
OUTRAGEOUS, I MEAN MIND BOGGLING BOAT
I got this crazy idea to build a Viking Dragon Ship. Too many Viking Shows on television I guess.
So I searched around until I found two identical 18 foot Starcraft aluminum boats. These boats have the chines on the sides that look like wooden boards. I mounted the boats on a 30 foot long by 12 inch high I beam and included an 18 ft piece of railroad rail for extra ballast. The I beam is thru bolted into the ribs of the hull as seen in video. The resulting boat is 39 feet long.
There are two 40 hp Evinrude outboard motors mounted amidships on the transom of the lead hull, facing forward. The motors are locked straight ahead. Steering is by changing motor speed and or rudder control. One motor has a weak spark on one cylinder. The area under the floor is filled with rigid foam panels.
The dragon head took me a full month to make. The basic shape is from wood. Onto this base the shapes and details of the head were roughed out by adding other pieces of wood and different kinds of screen and wire mesh. This form work was covered with a mixture of Gorilla Glue, sawdust and oil based paints. (I also made a dragon head hood ornament for my pickup. 70 mph in wind, rain and snow, no problem). The eyes are from overhead cab lights from a truck. High and low light bulbs for blinking eyes. The teeth are fossilized prehistoric sharks teeth (good old ebay). There is tubing to the mouth to set up a smoke generator so smoke can blow out the mouth and a separate tubing system for the nostrils. Smoke generator not purchased.
The dragon tail is from laminated pieces of wood.
The wooden look was created with a 'rocker grainer'. You can find video on youtube about this cool tool. See photo of wooden look on hull vs white paint during early construction.
The artwork on the sail is called a Viking Compass. You can research it, but there doesn't seem to be much accurate information about it.
The boat, dragon head, dragon tail and trailer were designed so they would clear the red lights on the highways by about a foot.
If you go to youtube and search for "Viking Dragon Ship, Dec 2016" you will find a video clip of the ship in winter storage. I have not gotten her into the water as yet which is reflected in the price. She will look magnificent running with the wind. Not sure how she will tack, but that is where the two motors come in, or a bunch of oarsmen (haha). If I had a video of her under sail the price would double or more. Have registration for boat and title for trailer.
When you stand at the rear of this long narrow open ship, you are almost immediately taken back 1000 years. Your heart starts to race as you picture the English shoreline coming out out of the mist and the men start to take their shields off the sides of the ship and prepare to beach.
Boat parades, boat shows, friendly outings, whatever you do with this ship will blow all the minds around and create a stream of internet photos and video. If you have any kind of business, this ship is an advertising bonanza. She will leave a lasting impression on whoever sees her, which is the core goal of advertising.
I am moving to Colorado, so I have to pass her on to a new owner to enjoy.
