BOATING MAGAZINE REVIEW
LOA: 35'0" (stem to platform) | Beam: 11'4" | Dry Weight: 18,792 lb. | Seating/Weight Capacity: Yacht Certified | Fuel Capacity: 214 gal. | More Information: searay.comSea Ray Boats When Sea Ray coined the Sundancer moniker, it was about sun and fresh air — and cabin cruising boats with big open cockpits for outdoor living. But not everyone wants to be pals with their dermatologist, so the coupe concept has become popular. The new Sundancer 350 Coupe provides a great example. It offers sun when you want it and protection from cold, heat or rain as needed. It will stretch your boating season too. The Sundancer 350 has proven to be popular and, as a coupe, it’s sure to reap continued success, but the Sundancer 350 Coupe is more than just an existing boat with a hardtop slapped on. It has the well-proven 20-degree deadrise hull that offers seaworthy comfort and good speed (42-plus mph), but the layout is considerably changed. The “psychiatrist’s couch” opposite the helm remains, offering either fore-aft lounging or couch seating. The helm is a delight, with a Garmin touchscreen display on which you can view Mercury VesselView link data. The skipper has a panoramic view through a huge single-pane windshield, and the zigzag side windows add to the openness. For entertaining, the doublewide helm seat spins to face the cockpit with its dinette and couch. Below, the L-shaped galley features a fridge, two-burner cooktop, microwave and surprisingly good counter space. A pair of couches completes the main cabin. The head is molded and easily cleaned, with a VacuFlush head and a man-size stall shower with a seat and sliding door to keep things dry. Forward is a five-sided master berth, but we might be tempted to claim the midship cabin with its full headroom, spacious double (using a filler) or two twins, and the optional bulkhead with privacy door. The coupe version adds all-weather use to the popular Sundancer 350, offering more protection and a longer boating season for all.
Captain's Report
The Sundancer 350 has an LOA of 35’, a beam of 11’4”, and can sleep six.MissionWith their Sundancer 350 Coupe model, Sea Ray is aiming for versatile entertaining in a design that will set it apart in the sport cruiser market. Sea Ray uses canny design elements to maximize both the entertaining and performance profiles of the boat. The floorplan in the cockpit and cabin both give the impression of a boat much larger than the Sundancer’s 35’ length, while the propulsion is in harmony with the boat’s physical specifications.
She has two sleeping cabins, making her suitable for two cruising couples. The dinette converts to a bed, making her able to handle a large family on overnight cruisers.
The Sundancer 350 Coupe’s layout with cockpit and upper deck on left and the lower deck on right.Distinguishing Features- •Enclosed Head. The head and full shower are designed in separate stalls, making privacy easier and alleviating early morning traffic jams in the head.
The foredeck seating, seen here in use. Note the guiderails for safe access.- •Foredeck seating. One of the major features of the Sundancer 350 Coupe is its foredeck seating, which takes the familiar sport boat bow lounge seating and combines it with a yacht-style foredeck sunning space for a unique new twist. The articulated back rest allows for lounging or socializing, and an optional table can be mounted and added to the space.
A close look at the option transom grill “gourmet center.” Note the grill, the sink-and-faucet, as well as the storage down below.- •In-transom Galley. The Sundancer 350 Coupe offers the option for a transom “gourmet center,” which provides a built-in grill, refrigerator, sink with faucet, and counter space that can be outfitted with stereo speakers right on the aft swim platform. This outdoor galley greatly enhances the boat’s entertaining possibilities.
- •Propulsion Systems. This boat is one of the few in class that can be ordered with either a sterndrive or V-drive, gas or diesel engine. .
- •Robotic Precision.Sea Ray is one of the few builders that uses robotics for its construction. This allows exact placement of cutouts and other details executed to precise measurements. .
Major Features- •Accommodations. The centerpiece of the Sundancer 350 Coupe is, arguably, its cabin. High overheads on enclosed head with separate shower, and lots of storage in cedar cabinets makes this head noteworthy. The design has also wrought enough space to sleep six -- two single beds abaft the companionway, a pull-out couch in the salon, and an offset V-berth double bed with memory foam mattress. .
The coupe hardtop offers many advantages, chief among them the optional retractable sunshade covering the cockpit, seen here in action.- •Coupe Hardtop. The Sundancer 350 Coupe’s hardtop is all-enclosed with glass windows that can open, a fiberglass sunroof, a dedicated air vent, and stainless steel supports around a single forward windshield. The hardtop can also be equipped with a retractable canvas sunshade that extends aft and covers the entire cockpit area. .
The Sundancer 350 Coupe’s optional joystick is a huge boon for the novice navigator and the seasoned pro in docking mode.
The Digital Throttle System is properly mounted for ergonomically-correct operation.- •Joystick Propulsion and Digital Throttle Control. The Sundancer 350 Coupe comes with a range of propulsion options, all of which are either sterndrive or inboard. The Axius joystick and/or the Digital Throttle Control are standard. Digitizing the throttle response makes the performance more consistent and predictable. Pair this with the joystick propulsion system -- which opens the boat’s range of movement and the precision at low speeds to maximize it in an easy-to-use interface -- and the boat’s handling is not just much easier to use but much more capable in all respects (Note: the standard propulsion, Twin MerCruiser® 6.2L MPI ECT Bravo® III Sterndrives, comes with the digital throttle control but NOT the Axius joystick). .
- •Space and Design. One of the clear standout aspects of the Sundancer 350 Coupe is certainly its use of space. Between the foredeck, cockpit, and cabin spaces, there isn’t a wasted inch -- open space exists only for increased comfort, and “dead” space is nearly always augmented to be “storage” space. The cockpit seating area feels open and social, the foredeck is spacious and just isolated enough to be a relaxing space away from socializing. The cabin can sleep six and does it without cramped, low overheads or eliminating the galley, head, or storage space. .
InspectionThe Bow
The bow seating area, seen here unoccupied. Note the adjustable backrests, seen here slightly from behind.Foredeck lounging space. The Sundancer 350 Coupe foredeck lounge space can be accessed via port and starboard walkways accompanied with waist-high stainless steel guardrails. This is a clever, added entertaining venue in the bow, which historically has only been used for sunning on express cruisers. This cuts off the foredeck from the flow of space extending from the swim platform, through the cockpit and helm, and down to the cabin. Considering the wealth of social space in the stern and cockpit, the isolation is an interesting contrast, offering an area where one can quietly read or sunbathe without feeling right in the middle of a larger party.
The U-shaped loungecan be outfitted with an optional table, though it does not have dedicated filler cushions to make it into a sunpad. This actually makes sense, as it is designed to easily translate from semi-circular social seating to a singular stretch-and-recline setting based on the position of the articulated backrest. The articulate backrest is forward-facing.
The opened windlass hatch. Note the spotlight and footswitches and the cleat to the right of the windlassThe windlass sits under a recessed hatch at the bow’s apex, with an option for either a rope or chain on the anchor. A stainless steel spotlight sits just to port of the windlass.
Helm
The captain’s chair, which can swivel back and face the cockpit area. Note the flip-up bolster and the joystick just to starboard of the chair.Helm seating. The helm sits entirely inside the coupe hardtop and consists of a helm seat. Portside seating resembles a chaise lounge, and there is an entryway down into the cabin between the two.
The captain’s chair swiveled back to face the cockpit and with its bolsters flipped up.The helm seat is double-wide in a bench style. It has flip-up bolsters, paddle adjustment levers, and a rotating base that allows the captain to easily turn and join the fun in the cockpit without abandoning the post. The seating here and throughout has an aesthetic attention to detail -- durable but comfortable materials, accented colors and stitching.
The companion’s seat lounger. The backrest has limited ability to adjust. This arrangement makes possible the accommodations below. To port of the helm seat is a lounger that’s elevated up with a teak step to access it. The seating has an aft-facing angled backrest on one end with a more straight-up-and-down bolster extending around the remaining edge.
A closer look at the dashboard panel on the Sundancer 350 Coupe -- note the leather brow above the switch panel, the dome compass on top, and the placement of cup holders above the HD display.Helm dash panel. The dash panel on the Sundancer 350 Coupe is stylish -- a gel coat finish with wood paneling, two leather-upholstered brows, chrome bezels, and an intuitive design. The gauges are separate from the tabs and switches, which are on the starboard side of the steering wheel, opposite the touchscreen layout to port of the wheel. One note -- be wary when using the cup holders on the dash; they sit directly above the choice of chartplotter display installed and could easily drip or spill right where you’d rather avoid it.
The helm dashcomes with bilge high-water alarms, SmartCraft diagnostics with the speedometer, tachometers, and 4-in-1 multi-gauges (fuel, oil, voltmeter, and water temperature), power-assisted tilt steering, and the Digital Throttle System.
Coupe HardtopThe coupe hardtop is, of course, a major element of its design. It encloses the helm entirely on three sides with windows that open, a retractable sunroof and wind vents above, and a forward windshield that is all one pane of safety glass. The supports are stainless steel, and an automated shade extending aft for the remainder of the cockpit can be added.
AccommodationsThrough a lockable companionway door at the helm, down four individual “flying” teak steps (which contribute to the spacious feeling in the cabin), leads to the Sundancer 350 Coupe’s cabin.
The Sundancer 350 Coupe’s below decks space, viewed from the main berth facing aft. Note the space behind the steps, which has berth and seating space. The head is to the right.Gourmet galley.Immediately to starboard upon descent is the galley, which has a microwave, refrigerator, stainless steel faucet and sink with cover (to expand counter space), a stove with two table-top burners, trash receptacle, and storage in the form of cedar cabinets above and below, as well as a drawer with cutlery insert. The counter-top is solid surface, and there is even a small portlight just above the sink for light and ventilation.
The galley, which sits just to starboard of the steps. Note the faucet; the sink is “hidden” under a filler slate that expands the counter space when sink is not in use.The cabin has a wealth of natural light coming in via two larger portlights on either side of the salon, a small circular portlight in the mid-berth aft of the stairs, and a sunroof over the master berth.
Seating and accommodations.Moving into the salon past the galley on the starboard side is an L-shaped seating space that can pull-out and convert to a berth, sleeping two. In its non-berth state the crook of the “L” can accommodate an optional table.
A look at the head below deck: note the glass-bowl sink, as well as the separate shower stalls at right. On the opposite port side is a smaller seating bench, with the door to the head just abaft the seating. The head has a portlight, a glass bowl sink with stainless steel faucet, storage, and a woodgrain floor. The head also has a shower which, as mentioned earlier, sits in a separate stall from the head itself.
The two individual berths in the mid-cabin. It can be made one larger berth via filler cushions. The mid-cabin has two individual berths, convertible with filler cushion into one double berth. The space can be upgraded with another HD TV and has a small seat to port facing the berths that seems optimal as a change-of-clothes seat.
A view of the master berth from the stairs facing forward. Note the salon seating to port and starboard; the starboard side seating folds out to create a berth as well. Note, too, the skylight above the master berth, as well as the step-up.The “master” berth is the foremost spot in the cabin and comes with a hidden privacy curtain, storage via shelved cabinets and a hanging locker, a sunroof just above the berth itself, and memory-foam mattress. There is a step-up to the berth and includes a little platform to set a plate of food or bottle of wine and individual lights at bedside for night time reading. Air conditioning (16,000 BTU) comes standard in the cabin. Finally, in addition to the wealth of storage in the cedar cabinets along the cabin’s overhead, the cabin also has in-deck storage.
Cockpit
A view of the cockpit facing aft, with the teak table installed. Note the transom door to starboard. The central social space for the Sundancer 350 Coupe is undoubtedly the cockpit seating area, which wraps around from portside abaft of the helm back along the transom, where it breaks for an access path to the stern, and comes around to starboard side. A removable table takes space in the middle of the L-shape and is either standard fiberglass or upgraded to teak.
A view of the cockpit from above; note that the seats sit atop storage bins, including the cooler storage below the starboard side seating.
A closer look at the cooler storage below the starboard seating in the cockpit.Storage abounds under the seating with fiberglass space under all the seat cushions. This extends as well to the steps on the starboard side leading up to the side foredeck access -- each can be upgraded to teak surface and lift to reveal storage below. The decks come standard as fiberglass with the snap-on carpet, but can be upgraded (along with the aft swim platform) to teak inlay as well. Just aft of the side-access steps is the transom door to the stern. The door is acrylic with a stainless-steel frame, and the pathway is a comfortable width.
Aft Swim Platform
The “extended” swim platform, seen here in use on the Sundancer 350 Coupe. Note the grill station, hidden here by its lid.To extend or not to extend? One of the major decisions when potentially purchasing the Sundancer 350 Coupe will involve the stern deck. Sea Ray offers the ability to “extend” the swim platform from its standard footprint.
The optional transom galleyis hidden by a fiberglass lid that lifts up with gas-assisted struts. It has a solid-surface countertop, grill, and refrigerator that can transform the aft swim platform into a patio cookout.
The stereo control console just off the aft swim platform. With the gourmet grill, extended/ hydraulic swim platform and this, one can really maximize use of the stern. The swim platform also has stereo speakers to keep the party integrated throughout the boat, and of course the stainless steel retractable reboarding ladder.
Fit and Finish
The finish and styling on the dashboard panel is indicative of the attention to detail throughout the boat.Quality material part of the mission.Certainly the style and “shine” that the details can bring are part of Sea Ray’s mission. The dash in particular is dressed for both ergonomics and good looks. Stainless steel trim and hardware, the full fiberglass shower, the quality of the wood in the cabin cabinets are just a few examples of the market details that Sea Ray has installed.
The construction of the Sundancer 350 Coupe’s hull is completed with a precision only a robotic system can deliver.Hull construction.Sea Ray cuts and gel coats their hulls robotically, which leads to a consistency and reliability in performance. The through-hull fittings are all stainless steel, and the gel coat finish in a choice of color gives the Sundancer 350 Coupe a clean, polished look to match its interiors.
Observations
The Sundancer 350 Coupe is built for entertaining, and has the well-designed space for a big party of guests. For a 35’ boat, the Sundancer 350 Coupe packs a bunch of style and luxury without feeling overstuffed. The design maximizes space, which means plenty of guests with places to put them. The galley is a great example -- it is complete with everything one will need. The Sundancer seeks luxury in attention to detail, quality of material, and creation of enjoyable spaces -- not overloading the boat with “stuff” that will look good on a list but compromise the enjoyable space and add cost. The extent to which the boat can be “customized” is somewhat overstated -- what’s offered are largely grace notes on a fairly ready-to-go boat as standard. If you’re in this market, the aft swim platform grill is a major upgrade worth making, and the LED lights are a great way to make the entire boat worthy of nighttime entertaining.
Sea Ray has managed to pack a lot of functionality into 35’ for both entertaining and family cruising.
