Description

The Mauritius 42, (Bruce Roberts design), hull was fabricated on a male mold. The mold was constructed of 2 x 6 lumber framework, rectangular in shape. The outside lines of the hull were used to create transverse hull station frames. The mold frames were then erected on the rectangular strongback. 1” lath strips were attached to the frame contours creating the hull shape. The stern received a curved plywood constructed detail that created the hull stern. The wooden mold structure was faired and refined to represent the desired hull contours. The wooden male mold thus finished, 1/2” thick end-grained balsa core mounted on a scrim sheet was diagonally located onto the mold and sewn to it. The Baltek End-Grained Balsacore was attached to the male mold from about 6” to 8” from the shear trimline to near the waterline. The Balsacore exists 360 degrees around the hull between the waterline and sheer. ½” closed cell 2 pound density polyurethane foam slab pieces were then fitted and sewn to the remaining areas of the hull that are not Balsacore. The foam was then faired. The prepared foam and Balsacore surfaces were then coated with polyester boat laminating resin. The deal comes with a set of blueprints. The layup schedule of chopped strand mat and woven roving consists of many layers. The hull is ¼” thick at the sheer and progressing increases in thickness to 5/8” thick in the keel. I personally laminated the hull; we maintained the highest of standards. The hull was then faired in 4 directions, 0/90/45/135 degrees to make it fair. The faired hull was then covered with a fine fiberglass cloth. A wooden hull cradle was the constructed upon the inverted hull. A crane was used to lift the hull off the male mold. Using the hull cradle, the hull was turned into its upright position. The hull sheer was trimmed with excess. The polyurethane foam was removed. The interior of the hull was prepared for laminating. The hull Balsacore was then sealed with polyester boat laminating resin. Finally, the Balsacore and interior of the hull was laminated with fiberglass mat and woving with polyester boat laminating resin. The final hull sheer line was trimmed. The hull became 13’2” beam and 43’ 6” in length using the above method. From the design lines we fabricated ‘out’ instead of ‘in’. Boat comes with masts, booms, pre-cut standing SS rigging, steering pedestal, life line stanchions, 2 (42) gallon diesel fuel tanks loose in boat, (2) ss 20 gallon water tanks in quarter butt region loose.Boat has installed solid floor bulkheads, almost all deck hardware.
