Description

Scrimshawis a Lyman-MorseSeguin 46' from 1982 that isfor salein SouthernCalifornia

She is an amazing cruising yacht that has been cherished by our family for the last 20 years. Unfortunately, we have experienced some life changing events that have affected us physically and will no longer allow us to enjoy this beautiful boat, so the time has come for us to sell her.

Designed by Sparkman & Stephens, built by Lyman-Morse, SCRIMSHAW is a rare ‘classic boat’ that shows impeccable attention to detail and quality craftsmanship on top of solid sea worthy construction. SCRIMSHAW’s stunning lines and classic bright work remind all who see her of the glory days of sailing when boats were developed as practical works of art. Built in 1983, SCRIMSHAW has only had two additional owners since her original commissioner. She has been immaculately maintained all her life and designed and customized to be sailed offshore comfortably by a couple or a small family. SCRIMSHAW's interior is practical, pretty and purposeful with things like a work bench, an easily accessible diesel engine, cozy wall-mounted cabin stove, inordinately large battery bank, water maker and a washer/dryer. We sailed her to New Zealand in 1999, but for the last decade we have used her for week-end sailing, and we are not planning any more long range trips. However, all the work we put into her for our trip has been perfectly maintained and if I was able bodied I would not hesitate to take SCRIMSHAW out to cruise the blue waters of the world again.

Construction:

SCRIMSHAW has an extremely strong hand laid fiberglass hull and deck over Airex core. Fiberglass over plywood house top on laminated deck beams. Solid teak deck overlay screwed to sub deck and bedded in 5200. External lead keel. Bulkheads are teak or mahogany marine grade plywood. White teak cabin sides with varnished teak corners. White topsides with blue bottom and dark blue cove stripe. Edson pedestal steering to large skeg hung rudder, perfect for blue water cruising.

Deck Gear:

S.S. double rollers are located on the centerline of the stem. A Nilsson electric windlass (new motor in 2011) with gypsy is aft of that. Fresh water washdown on deck. Three large deck hatches and 5 dorade mounted cowl vents with S.S. guards provide excellent ventilation. A custom storage box holds a diving tank and/or gear. SS bow and stern rails with double lifelines and gates port and starboard and gate stowed boarding ladder to starboard. The stern rail was modified to support solar panels to port and starboard.

The side decks are wide and uncluttered. The coach house roof is an attractive buff color with slightly contrasting non-skid. and snappy white cabin sides offset the varnished corner pieces and the eyebrow. The mainsheet traveler is mounted forward of the dodger, providing a clean and safe cockpit.

SCRIMSHAW has a comfortable T-shaped cockpit with folding cockpit table attached to the pedestal and a cambered helmseat at the wheel. The coamings are at a slant, creating comfortable back rests. Stereo speakers and electronics are mounted under the new dodger. A cockpit shower with hot & cold water is located in the aft part of the cockpit. The three aft deck hatches allow access to the steering and provides exceptionally large storage.

Accommodations:

SCRIMSHAW sleeps 6. The custom layout offers excellent use of space with 1 head, roomy stowage and good ventilation with 6'4" headroom.

Forward, there is a chain locker which gives access to the chain. It has a trough which moves the chain further aft repositioning the weight away from the stem. It is followed by spacious double v-berth with voluminous stowage beneath. Aft of the berth port and starboard there are dressers with drawers and lockers above. There are lights for each berth and a fan.

Next aft is the head to port with sink, shower, a manual toilet and stowage lockers. A full height locker with washer and dryer and more storage is across from the head to starboard.

Next aft is the main saloon with settee berths port and starboard, with large bookshelves above flanked by front lockers to starboard and a hanging locker and spinnaker storage to port. Most locker doors are fashioned with a grated insert, providing ventilation and interesting visual detail. To port, against the forward bulkhead, is a charming diesel fired cabin heater (needs servicing). The bulkhead protective fireboard is covered with "Delft" tiles. Outboard of the stove is a TV with a DVD player. To starboard is a cabinet with countertop and storage above. A drop leaf table is between the berths with drawers and a large stowage bin. Outboard of each berth, and beneath the bookshelves and lockers, are easily accessed stowage compartments.

The galley is next aft to port in one of the two passageways to the aft cabin and features stowage outboard, and, above, a reefer (which runs on 110v and engine driven cold plate system) with separate large freezer, both with custom built cold plates. Inboard, and over the engine, is additional counter space with drawer, followed by two large and deep SS sinks with pressure water as well as manual pumps for fresh and salt water. A handy refuse compartment slides out from underneath. Custom built racks to house china, mugs, spices and wine bottles are above the sinks. Outboard is a 3 burner Dickinson gimbelled propane stove with oven. Fans face to the center of the boat.

The navigation station with chart table and seating is located in the starboard passageway. With the seat facing aft, good communication with the cockpit is facilitated.

In the aft cabin there is a spacious double quarter berth to starboard with large storage compartments beneath. To starboard of the centerline companionway ladder is a small settee with a hanging locker behind it. Along the port side of the aft cabin is a workbench area with good countertop space and plenty of storage for tools and spare parts. The finish below is "Herreshoff style" - varnished trim with white vertical surfaces and white overhead and teak and holly sole. SCRIMSHAW is well ventilated with four hatches, five dorade ventilators and eight opening ports and is fitted with screens. The main cabin hatch is fitted with security bars, allowing for the hatch to remain open at night.

SCRIMSHAW is hull number 8 of these rare and highly regarded classic S&S designed Sequins and was built for Jim House who worked closely with both the designer and the builder. The layout was carefully thought out and "mocked up" prior to construction and the result is a comfortable cruising boat with good use of space and excellent stowage. Rod Stevens was also involved in the specifications and early sea trials. With her large skage rudder, roller furling headsail, slab reefing main and lines leading aft to the cockpit, coupled with self-tailing winches she can be easily handled and is highly recommended for anyone desiring a quality cruising boat in this size range.
