Defender D12 Sailboat and Trailer
Description
This is a 1974 Defender D12 Sail number US26 - this is the original of the "mini America's Cup" style boats. They were designed for one-on-one match racing in matched boats - so no crew to complain about, no differences in the boats or sails - just race. It led to the Millimeter class and eventually the International 2.4 class.
The boat is equipped with main, jib and symmetric spinnaker (with pole) - all controlled from the skippers seat in the hull.
The boat is about 12.5' long and 2.5' wide - with the tall rig and design features of its much larger cousins. It requires a minimum of 2.5' of water to float but needs deeper water to launch off the trailer.
The trailer includes a long extension to aid in getting the trailer deep enough to float the keel off. The boat can also be easily picked up with a hoist and placed in the water.
Like the full size boats, it is a true keel boat - the keel provides roughly 350 lbs of ballast to the boat - making it far more stable than it might appear.
The boat is ready to sail and is in reasonably good shape but is obviously a special kind of boat - it is a very technical kind of rig (ideal for those of us who love to adjust and fiddle with things)
It is an absolute blast to sail in semi-protected waters - it handles very well and turns very quickly - a very maneuverable little boat.
