Description

This boat comes from an estate. It was loved, and shows it. The Yanmar diesel starts up instantly. The fiberglass hull is in excellent condition. No delamination, no blisters. The sails are crisp and clean. Running rigging is in good condition. Standing rigging is in excellent condition. The bilge is clean.
The upholstery, is great shape: original, clean, no stains, rips or tears... The canvas cover for the mainsail is in good condition, as is the protective stripe on the furling headsail. The furler is a Harkin, and it works great.
In the pics if you look very closely, you will see what looks like a few small water stains. That's what they are. There was one bulkhead with some dry-rot, but that has been fixed, and the leaks have been fixed. Some work with some carpet cleaner and the few stains that exist should be fixed. The carpet for the boat is clean and in good condition. The wood interior is in great shape. No leaks around the windows, and the paneling has no stains. The boat has curtains which are in great shape.
If you are familiar with S-2 yachts, they were built very well. The interiors feature a lot of teak, and the exteriors are to quality. All of the hardware is top quality and in good shape. The winches are two speed, and there are several winch handles. The boat is rigged to allow raising the main and unfurling the genoa from the cockpit. Perfect for single handling. The cockpit is a ahead-of-it's time T shape, with adequate room for 6 people.
This boat is simple: no pressure water, no complex head to deal with.(it's a porta-potty) Hand and foot pumps, all work. The alcohol stove works great. This boat does NOT smell. It is clean and dry. The transmission and throttle are combined in one easy to use lever.
The boat has a fuel level meter, and an hours run meter, which has 108 hours. Yes, a 30+ year old boat with 108 hours on the engine! It looks like new. It runs like new. It has a new impeller. The prior owner kept good maintenance records, and the engine was maintained impeccably.
There's a new stereo, which has blue tooth capability. Use your smart phone to play through the stereo. The instrumentation on the boat includes a depth finder and speedometer. There is a relatively new 25watt VHF with the antenna on the top of the mast. The compass looks new. The boat has an automatic bilge pump, a battery charger / trickle charger maintainer, and two new heavy duty marine batteries. There is a shore power cable which looks almost new.
So is this the perfect boat? It's got a few problems we need to mention: there is 2" long crack on the starboard cabin at the cockpit which has been fixed, but could have been finished a bit better. There are also some small hairline cracks on the starboard side of the cabin near the forward grab rail. A survey in 2015 found moisture readings near the chainplates and near the rudder post.. ( There does not appear to be any soft spots, though). Finally, as is typical of S-2's, the cockpit is somewhat spongy, but there are no cracks, and it appears to be structurally sound. I had repair techs from the local yard look at it and they concluded that there was nothing worth doing (that's a first!) .
When the boat was out of the water, the bottom is smooth and without any dings, repairs, scratches or blisters. Same with the rudder. However, this is an old boat: I am sure that there are other things that could use fixing.
The boat comes with the usual spare parts, a Yanmar service manual, spare line, sail bags, tiller cover, and the required Coast Guard flares, bell, horn, life preservers, etc. It also has a steel cradle for winter storage. ( There may be a storage charge or loading charge from the yard that has the cradle).

Some other facts, in no particular order: The oil / filters were changed in the fall when it was winterized. I have not used the stove, but it appears as if no one has ever used it. Ditto on the head. There's lots of extra stuff, including a brand new "tiller minder" still in the packaging. There are two slugs on the mainsail which need to be replaced. The boat sails well, I've taken it out three times this season, and sails are clean and in good shape. A tad baggy for a fanatic racer, but OK. No rips, tears, prior repairs, etc. They are North Sails. Includes all the main battens. It's not as fast as a well-sailed Catalina 30 tall rig, but it will give that boat a run for the money ( ok, we're all competitive when we sail). The tiller cover is at end of life. Works, but needs to be replaced; it's faded. Stainless steel throughout the boat is in good shape. I inspected the turnbuckles and swags, they seem in good shape, no rust noticed. (note: I didn't take a microscope to them, just normal sailor's inspection) The electric main switch sometimes seems to need to be jiggled when turning on: probably needs some contact cleaner. (only had this happen once, but in the interests of full disclosure....) Anchor chain seems a tad rusty. Rode appears as if never used. Unlike a lot of boats this age, there are hardly any dings, scrapes, spurious holes, etc. The hull and deck look to be in remarkable condition. The deck is NOT chalky. It was professionally waxed 2 years ago, based on service records. I forgot to test the instruments (speed and depth finder)... but the display units look brand new.
